The peak season runs from April to September. Although it is possible to spot whales and dolphins year-round, the number of trips is reduced from October to March due to lower demand and generally adverse weather conditions.
We use traditional lookouts, a whale-spotting technique dating back to the whaling era, to improve the detection of these animals. With lookouts stationed on the islands of Faial and Pico, whale sightings are almost guaranteed, with few days missing out on seeing the large cetaceans. In 2011, 95% of our trips included whale sightings.
Each sea trip lasts 3 to 4 hours, with two daily trips: one at 08:30 and another at 14:30. The schedule can be adjusted according to the group's convenience. People of all ages can join, and we are also equipped to accommodate clients with reduced mobility who do not require assistance.
Before departure, we conduct a briefing to explain how the activity will unfold, detailing the various species of whales and dolphins, the area we will explore, and what we hope to observe. This briefing is conducted after consulting with the lookouts, who have been monitoring the sea for several hours.
We have a cabin boat with a capacity for 12 people, equipped with two separate cabins, a kitchen, and a bathroom, making it ideal for individuals with reduced mobility, back problems, disabilities, pregnant women, and children up to 3 years old. Additionally, we have three rigid inflatable boats, each also accommodating 12 people. These are the most comfortable, as passengers sit on individual seats. Depending on the weather conditions, clients might get a bit wet, but we provide waterproof suits before departure. Generally, rigid inflatable boats are the most sought-after.
We operate along the coastlines of Faial, Pico, and São Jorge, within a radius of approximately 10 miles from the shores.
This activity is subject to a minimum number of participants. If the minimum number is not met, the agency will cancel the trip or attempt to substitute it with a similar one.
